How Often Does a Grease Trap Require Cleaning?

How to Use Your Grease Trap Properly

...grease traps separate oils, grease, and sludge from the water before it reaches the sewer line. These devices are often essential as they prevent clogs and other plumbing damages caused by grease, which is thick in density and doesn’t dissolve or mix with water. If you have a grease trap in your home or business, it’s important to maintain it. Not only can cleaning it protect your plumbing and property, it can also save you from large fines.

At Freedom Environmental, we recommend businesses invest in grease trap cleaning every three months or so. For residential grease traps, we suggest cleaning at least a few times per year. You can count on our expert team to thoroughly clean your grease trap so that you can avoid clogs, overflowing plumbing lines, and other costly issues. If you don’t currently have a grease trap but could benefit from one, we’ll be more than happy to install it.

If you follow these simple rules and commit to routine cleaning, your grease trap will remain in optimal shape.

  • Don’t pour grease down sinks or toilets: While it may be tempting to use your sinks and toilets as a garbage can for grease, doing so will lead to more harm than good. Grease will harden and stick to your pipes. Plus food particles will stick to the grease and cause clogs.
  • Limit garbage disposal use: It’s okay to use your garbage disposal every once in a while but if you overuse it, food particles will fill up your grease trap quicker and increase how often you need to clean it.
  • Recycle cooking oil: If you typically pour waste cooking oil down the sink, it’s in your best interest to recycle it instead. It can turn into biofuel and generate power for your property. This saves you money while protecting the environment.

Who Needs a Grease Trap?

The most obvious type of business that needs a grease trap is a restaurant. However, there are many other types of ventures that depend on grease traps to prevent problems and operate smoothly, including:

  • Bakeries
  • Coffee shops
  • Malls
  • Educational institutions
  • Convenience stores
  • Food manufacturers
  • Hotels
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Grocery stores
  • Airports
  • Labs
  • Government facilities

Some residential homes also require grease traps. If you cook and entertain often, a grease trap is certainly worth considering.
